Can VLC convert MP4 to MP3?

Yes. In VLC, choose Media → Convert/Save, add your file, click Convert/Save, then pick the "Audio - MP3" profile and set an output filename ending in .mp3. It works but takes several steps, and you have to already have VLC installed.

Does converting MP4 to MP3 lose quality?

Slightly, because the audio is re-encoded from one lossy format to another. At 192 kbps or above the difference is inaudible for almost all material. Choosing a bitrate higher than the source cannot recover detail that was never there.

Is there a file size limit?

No upload limit, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to roughly 1.5GB convert fine on a typical laptop; beyond that your browser may run out of memory, and the API is the better route.

Why is my converted MP3 quieter than the video?

Some videos carry multi-channel audio that gets downmixed to stereo, which lowers perceived loudness. Converting at a higher bitrate will not fix it — normalise the volume in an audio editor afterwards if it matters.

Can HandBrake convert MP4 to MP3?

Not really. HandBrake is a video transcoder and always writes a video container (MP4, MKV, WebM), so it cannot produce a standalone .mp3. Use this page or VLC instead.
